IMRAN KHAN
Imran Khan, the former prime minister of Pakistan, was shot at
while leading a protest march in the eastern city of Wazirabad. He survived the attack.
A gunshot hit their platform, a container being towed by a
vehicle, injuring him in the leg and four other persons as well.
The attack's motivation, which allies claim was an attempt at
assassination, went without an immediate government response.
Early elections were being demanded, hence the call for the
protest march.
Just one hour before the incident, Imran Khan shifted the location of his protest.
Just before the shooting, Imran Khan had instructed his supporters to join him to another section of Wazirabad town where he was planning to give an address instead, promising to speak there.
The march, which was being led by Mr. Khan, was planned to end in
Islamabad, the country's capital.
The former prime minister was observed being transported to a
Lahore hospital. A party spokesman said he had been hit in the shin.
Mr. Khan's condition is stable, according to a PTI party official,
provincial health minister Yasmeen Rashid.
A man who was detained by the police and who they claim attempted
to kill the former prime minister has confessed on tape, according to the
police.
The interview's circumstances are unknown, but when the man is questioned by authorities about why he fired, he responds as follows:
"He
was leading the populace astray. I desired to murder him. I attempted to murder
him."

Before there is a burst of gunfire, Mr. Khan and his followers can
be seen riding on top of the shipping container in video footage from the site.
Then, as those nearby attempt to avoid him, Mr. Khan is seen ducking.
Another video depicts Mr. Khan being driven away in a car after
the shooting while still alive and wearing a bandage on his right leg.
A PTI member who has blood on his clothes and a bandage on his
face is also seen. He tells onlookers to pray for Mr. Khan and everyone who has
been hurt.
The senior advisor to Mr. Khan, Raoof Hasan, told the AFP news
agency that "this was an effort to kill him, to assassinate him."
Shehbaz Sharif, the current prime minister, denounced the shooting
and commanded a prompt probe. The incident was a "heinous assassination
attempt," according to President Arif Alvi.
For the past seven days, Mr. Khan has led a protest march, the
second such gathering this year, pushing for new elections.
The government has stated this numerous times.
Elections will take place as scheduled next year, the government
has frequently stated.
Khan was barred from running for public office by Pakistan's
election board last month in a case that the former All-Star cricketer said was
politically motivated.
He had been charged with misdealing information about gifts from
foreign dignitaries and the proceeds of their suspected sale. Rolex watches, a
ring, and a set of cufflinks were among the gifts.
Political violence has a long history of being fatal in Pakistan.
In the most well-known incident, former prime minister Benazir
Bhutto was killed in 2007 at a gathering of the general population.
