pins down second state title at High school girls wrestling:
On
Thursday, February 16, 2023, at the Sevier Valley Center in Richfield, the
Grantsville girls wrestling team displays the state wrestling championship
trophy it has won the last two years.
A
state championship wrestling team allegedly needs a ballerina, three
cheerleaders, and a mixture of tennis and softball players.
At
least they are for Grantsville High School, which won the combined 1A, 2A, and
3A field on Thursday night to win its second consecutive girls wrestling state
championship.
Last
year, we started working as soon as the tournament was completed, according to
coach Matt Mecham. He claimed that the philosophy of the programme is to
collaborate with the other athletic departments at the institution while also
recruiting athletes.
Grantsville
won with 274 points, Juab came in second with 187 points, and Canyon View came
in third with 183 points.
Mecham
remarked, "We practise with the boys so they see what physical wrestling
is. "They know that's wrestling when they watch the boys knocking each
other down. I believe it provides us an advantage.
Mecham
stated, "She doesn't get rattled.
Butler
added, "I locked it up in a suicide cradle, she battled it for for 45
seconds." It's miraculous,
She
began competing in wrestling this year.
"My
guys are amazing; they really worked hard. We achieved the end goal, which was
this.
Grantsville
junior Nikki Dong defeated Samantha Reynolds of Juab to win her first state
individual championship in only her second year of eligibility.
Dong
remarked, "It's really an honour, and I'm very happy to be doing it."
I simply adore wrestling. That has benefited me in my life. Just seeing how far
we've come makes me so happy.
Hailey
Broderick completed Grantsville's individual champions for the evening. In the
150 division, she defeated Amelia Simper of Manti via fall. It was Broderick's
second triumph as an individual.
After
beginning the season in the middle, she won her first race the previous year.
Broderick
remarked, "My sister was my drill partner and she pushed me so much."
Because of her, all I wanted to do was get better and better.
A
two-time champion is also sister of Broderick.
Girls
wrestling has taken hold and developed in numerous ways in only a short period
of time, claims Mecham.
The
growth of women's wrestling is astounding, but so is the increase in talent and
skill, according to Mecham. He claimed that as more girls take up the sport,
there is tougher rivalry from schools all around the state.
Meacham
remarked, "This was a difficult event.
One
of those tough opponents was Enterprise sophomore Alexandria Ramirez, who won a
decision match at 120 pounds against Grantsville's Brielle Fawson.
Ramirez
admitted that he was "excited, emotional, and exhausted." When they
celebrated Ramirez's victory, her teammates, admirers, and relatives surrounded
her.
Ramirez
said, "Oh yeah, I'll be back next year.
