A closer look at some common symptoms
Symptoms vary depending on the type of heart cancer.
Many people with respiratory cancer have shortness of breath, coughs,
or chest pain.
A patient with melanoma might experience a lump or discoloration on the skin that doesn't go away. Other symptoms can include fatigue, fever, or weight loss.
You should see your doctor right away if you notice any new symptom that is unusual for you. The sooner you are diagnosed, the better your chances are of beating it! But how does one detect these telltale signs?
Here are some ways to determine whether you may be suffering from this illness:
1) Check your symptoms against those mentioned above to narrow down the cause. If they match up, don't hesitate to call your doctor ASAP.
2) If they don't seem to match up, but you're still feeling worried, ask yourself these questions- has anything changed in your life recently? Has my appetite changed? Have I been feeling very tired? Has my pain level increased?
What might cause these heart problems?
Another common cause is high blood pressure which makes your heart work harder. If you have any other medical conditions such as diabetes or high cholesterol then it puts you at an even greater risk for CAD. Other causes include smoking, having too much alcohol, and being overweight or obese.
There are many treatments available for heart disease. Some are lifestyle changes such as quitting smoking, limiting alcohol consumption, and maintaining a healthy weight.
Medications like beta-blockers or calcium channel blockers may be prescribed if lifestyle changes aren't enough. Sometimes surgery is required to open narrowed arteries or place devices that help regulate blood flow like stents, pacemakers, or defibrillators.
How are heart problems diagnosed?
The most common way to diagnose heart problems is with an electrocardiogram (ECG), which measures the heart's electrical activity to see if it is normal.
ECG tests can be done by touching electrodes on the skin or putting them on the chest with wires that connect to a machine.
In some cases, doctors may order an echocardiogram (echo) instead. This test uses sound waves to create images of the heart as it beats and pumps blood. A more detailed exam called coronary angiography may also be done.
During this procedure, a doctor injects dye into your blood vessels so they can check for blockages. A small tube called a catheter is inserted through an artery in the leg into the arteries near the heart. If doctors find evidence of blockages during this procedure, they might recommend coronary bypass surgery or angioplasty.
After diagnosis – treatment options
The treatment for heart cancer depends on the type of cancer that is diagnosed. Some people can have surgery to remove the tumor while others will need radiation therapy or chemotherapy.
If you have symptoms that worry you, it's important to see your doctor right away so they can diagnose and treat it as soon as possible. As time goes on and more treatments become available, the chances of living longer after diagnosis improves.
Still, 1 in 4 patients dies within a year of diagnosis. However, with continued research and improved technologies, we hope to get closer to finding cures.
